It takes its name from Lütfü Deveci, nicknamed “Deveci,” who was the first to cultivate this variety. In 1963, he was chosen by the French as one of 22 figures recognized worldwide as pioneers in the field of fruit growing. In Ağa Village (Ağaköy) of Gürsu, he succeeded in producing the Gürsu Deveci pear weighing 1.5 kilograms. During the 1960s, production began to spread rapidly, and over time, it became one of Turkey’s most valuable pear varieties. With its large size, juiciness, and durability, it is a preferred type of pear both in the domestic market and for export. Gürsu Gürsu Deveci pear was officially registered in 2019.
